Dubrovnik West coast – Slano

Dubrovnik West coast – Slano

Tourist board of Dubrovnik Coast

The Coast of Dubrovnik is a gentle region of olive groves and vineyards, with an indented shore and lavish vegetation, picturesque folk costume and the local dance “lindo”. This is a maritime region whose villages, embraced by coves and sandy beaches, used to be the summer homes of Dubrovnik noblemen, and which today are places of rest and enjoyment for many tourists.

This is an area of contrast, with some twenty villages nestling in the beauty of the landscape, some defined bythe sea and others with scarcely enough soil and an abundance of stone scattered among the slopes of the interior.

The shoreline is more developed and livelier, orientated to life by the sea, fishing and tourism; whilst inland villages are barely reached by the scent of the sea.

Their life is one of vines and olive trees, fi gs, carobs, sage, heather and rosemary, pine and holm-oaks, growing among the rocks. These two contrasting areas create a unique scenery of azure blue, green foliage and white stone. This is the Community of the Dubrovnik Coast, with its administrative seat in Slano.

Dugi otok

To have a magical holiday one doesn’t need a magic formula. All you have to do is spread a map and look for Croatia, the ancient Zadar and Dugi otok. Geographically, it is an island of great diversity and contrast, and the largest island among the North Dalmatian islands. It justifies its name (long island) with a length of about 45 km and it is between 1 and 4 km wide, with the highest peak Vela Straža (338 m). The coast of the island facing the open sea is characterized by sharp contrasts: the part that is located in the Nature Park is mostly steep and dominated by beautiful cliffs, while on the southeast side of the island one can find quiet coves and the sandy beach Sakarun. The island's beauty is an ideal place for swimming and enjoying the purity of the sea and the beauty of nature.

Dugi Rat

Dugi Rat

Tourist board of Dugi Rat

The municipality of Dugi Rat is situated by the very seaside, along the Adriatic road, and stretches from the village of Podstrana to the town of Omis. At its northern side it is surrounded by Mt Mosnjica, and on its southern side, by the sea of the Brac Channel. This entire area thus lies by the very seafront covering a surface of approximately 12 km2.

If considered from the east, this region covers the following villages:
DUCE, DUGI RAT, ORIJ, MALI RAT, SUMPETAR, SUHI POTOK, KRILO and BAJNICE.

In the foot of Mt Mosnjica are old villages such as: DUCE, KRUG, ZELJOVICI and JESENICE.

The municipality of Dugi Rat has an ideal setting along the seaside, as it is situated between two urban centres: Omiš, a smaller town and Split a larger city, of ancient history and numerous cultural and historic treasures.

The municipality of Dugi Rat is an ideal link between them, creating a series of villages as part of a continuous chain of houses and villages.

Vranjača cave is located in the heart of the Dalmatian hinterland, the resort Kotlenice half hour drive from Split and only 10 minutes drive from Dugopolje. The cave is situated centrally at the foot of the mountain Mosor, on its northern side and consists of two parts. The entrance area, without cave decorations, known locals since ancient times, while the second part discovered the land owner where there is a cave, Mr. Stipe Punda, 1903. Cave was opened for tourists in 1929. From the first entry hall leads through a small natural corridor to another room, which is made up of 9 small parts filled with cave ornaments of various shapes and colors. The specificity of these caves is that the internal temperature is constant throughout the year and is about 15⁰C. Filled with stalactites and stalagmites, cave pillars and arcades, Vranjača is one of the gems of nature of the karst region, and in 1963 it was declared a protected geomorphologic natural monument. Near the entrance to the cave Vranjaca is the starting point of hiking trails leading to the top of Vicko's Column (1325 m). By organizing this visit, the preservation and care of the cave is engaged in trade craft family Punda from Kotlenica.
