Maškovića Han - Restaurant

Maškovića Han - Restaurant

In a little place called Vrana, nearby Pakoštane, there is cultural heritage Maškovića Han. It was intended to be the residence of a high dignitary of the Turkish royal court Jusuf Mašković. In 17th century he ordered the construction, unfortunately it was left unfinished because Jusuf Mašković got killed by his own army because he showed mercy to defeated Venetian captives during the Cretan war.

Maškovića Han is also special because it is the westernmost heritage of the former Ottoman Empire.

In this historic building an event called Days of Vrana knights is organized each year and historic characters and scenery of the past are brought to life.

Memorial center Faust Vrančić

Memorial center Faust Vrančić

The story of Faust Vrančić even today, after a century of research into his life, has not yet been fully told. This versatile scientist and inventor, author of many lexicographical, philosophical and poetic works, was born in Šibenik in 1551, where he gained a basic humanities education.

Specifically, we must not forget that at the time Faust's life, technical sciences as we know them, physics, mechanics and mathematics were in their infancy and that his innovating solutions were largely intuitively based. Through observation and experience, which he acquired as the administrator of the Veszprem estates, he made sketches of 56 devices, which included the development of innovative solutions for mills that were water and wind-powered, various devices for carrying heavy construction, bridges, of which the most were those made of bronze, many different watches... These inventions gathered in the volume Machinae Novae, was released before the end of his life. The book contains 49 sketches with commentaries in Latin, Italian, Spanish, French and German.

Though the world today knows of him as the inventor of the Homo Volans, the flying man, we should not forget his other works, historical, and philosophical and lyrical, written in Latin, which reflect the spirit of the Renaissance.

A very important legacy of Faust Vrančić is his five-language dictionary named Dictionary of the Five Most Noble European languages (Dictionarium quinque nobilissimarum Europaea linguarum, latinae, italicae, germanicae, dalmaticae et ungaricae) which was not only the first Croatian, but also the first Hungarian dictionary.

Meštrovićeve Crikvine - Kaštilac

Meštrovićeve Crikvine - Kaštilac

Crikvine-Kaštilac, the former Renaissance summerhouse (early 16th century) of the Capogrosso family, is situated in the vicinity of the Ivan Meštrović Gallery. Originally built as a holiday home for the aristrocratic Capogrosso family and as a possible shelter from Ottoman attacks, the edifice has also served many other purposes in the course of its history (at one point it became a tannery, then a cloth dyers’ workshop, and was even a lazaretto for victims of the plague). In 1939, Ivan Meštrović bought and adapted the complex, intending to exhibit a cycle of reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The reliefs were to be placed in the newly constructed Chapel of the Holy Cross. In addition to building this chapel, Meštrović reconstructed the western part of the courtyard, building in it a peristyle with a variation of Doric columns.

The sculptor’s wood reliefs (some of which took 33 years to create) are of particular value because of the different styles attributed to specific periods. Starting from the early reliefs created in 1917 (Deposition, Temptation of Christ), the development of his artistic expression can be followed from the linearity of the stylised Art Nouveau, through the reliefs with harmonious classic curves (Christ and the Samaritan Woman, the Annunciation of 1927), to the realism of the 1940s. The cycle is one of the most moving Christological cycles in Croatian art. The apse holds a wooden crucifix from 1916, a work of extraordinary intensity.

The western part of the complex, which consists of the Church of the Holy Cross (with its reliefs and cloister), is an integral part of the donation contract of 1952. The Church of the Holy Cross is consecrated and destined for services in Old Slavic, which was Meštrović’s wish.

The eastern part of Meštrović’s Crikvine-Kaštelet complex holds the Renaissance Chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel and an adjoining loggia with the stone inventory Meštrović added during the adaptation. Although he never finished renovating the east chapel, it remains an integral part of the artist’s design and spatial concept. It should thus be considered an indivisible part of the complex.
Meštrović's Crikvine - Kaštilac
Crikvine-Kaštelet of Ivan Meštrović in Split is the restored 16th century villa extended according to Meštrović’s idea as place of peace and contemplation. For the Church of Holy Cross in the complex he artist worked in wood the great Crucifix and 28 reliefs with scenes from the life of Christ. This is an oeuvre that belongs among the masterpieces of Croatian sculptors.

Wellcome to the island of Mljet, the most beautiful and most forested island in the Adriatic and one of the most beautiful pearls of the Mediterranean. Untouched nature, the island's mysticism, olive groves, vineyards and rich forests are ideal places to research the rich flora and fauna, and to peacefully enjoy the pristine beauty of the natural surroundings.

It was already mentioned in the fourth century BC in Greek writing, and the numerous Greek amphora and shipwrecks along the coast of Mljet are evidence that Greek sailors stayed on the shores of Mljet during their journeys.

Mljet National Park makes up most of the island, and there are several villages, two salt water lakes - Veliko and Malo jezero, and a Benedictine monastery on the island of sv. Marija [St. Mary] . In Polače there are some of the best natural anchorages in the Adriatic.

Preserved from the Illyrian period, there are many fortifications and tombs, and the best preserved are those on the hill of Veliki Gradac, Veliko jezero and the fortress at Vodice, above the water source at Vodice at Babino Polje. The Roman Palace, which is the largest after Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the Arena in Pula, is a part of the valuable heritage of the island of Mljet.
